Program Overview

As fires devastate Los Angeles, artists are once again on the frontlines—volunteering, organizing supply drives, offering free childcare, cooking meals, and supporting those who have lost everything. These same artists, many of whom are still reeling from the economic fallout of COVID and the strikes, are now facing their own losses, with dwindling resources to sustain them.

The Center for Provocative Thought's GoFundArtists Relief Program is raising critical dollars to commission artists who have lost their homes, providing both financial relief and the means to rebuild through their work. Getting people back to work—across all sectors—is essential for the health of our communities, and artists play a vital role in that ecosystem. We have started collecting artists' personal GoFundMe's in this spreadsheet, which will be transformed into a searchable database for producers / hiring entities to reference in the future.

To ensure funds are allocated fairly and ethically, we have developed a simple rubric that will effectively serve as an inclusion rider for this program. This rubric is informed by best practices established by the many incredible funders and organizations in Los Angeles, including Arts for LA, LA County Department of Arts & Culture, City of Santa Monica, and other entities, to prioritize support for those in the greatest need, particularly individuals from historically excluded backgrounds.

Long-Term Vision

Our long-term vision for the GoFundArtists campaign is to grow this fund into a sustainable resource for ongoing artist commissions. While we are currently focused on supporting artists who have lost their homes, we recognize that many others have been deeply impacted—losing jobs as businesses burn, gigs as events are canceled, and opportunities that not reappear amongst the disaster. The Center for Provocative Thought believes that artists are an essential part of the city’s social and emotional recovery, offering creative outlets, connection, and healing during times of crisis. Supporting artists is not only about rebuilding careers, but also about prioritizing the mental health and well-being of our community as we move forward .
